Catholic Bishop opposes e-bingo in northern province of the Philippines

A catholic bishop opposes rejects the two resolutions related to e-bingo sites.

According to The Manila Times, a catholic bishop has opposed any move to allow more e-bingo sites in the entire Benguet province, including Baguio City.

According to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, Bishop Victor Bendico of Baguio issued a pastoral letter against additional gaming and gambling in Benguet at the height of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.

To even think about it during this time of pandemic, according to Bendico, is already “degrading and troublesome.”

“We, the faithful of the Diocese of Baguio, strongly oppose the proposal to have more bingo stalls in the city of Baguio to include the province of Benguet,” he said.

The Manila Times mentions, the city council had passed two resolutions approving a request of RCC Global Entertainment Inc. to operate e-bingo and other games authorized by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp.

Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong, however, rejected the two resolutions, citing the lack of public consultation.

Bendico said it was frustrating to know that these games continue to exist in the city and some local officials want more of them.

Bendico is leading a signature campaign to drum up the Baguio diocese’s call against more e-bingo operations, The Manila Times reported.

“May we then be united to oppose the opening of other gambling areas where hopeful citizens can be lured to lose their money to the detriment of their families,” he said.

“Let us continue to act and to fight gambling that destroys life, wreaks havoc on communities and promotes greed and addiction,” the bishop added.
