A cold snap blankets Taiwan as animal shelters across the country enhance measures to protect animals from the cold. The New Taipei City Animal Protection and Health Inspection Office has activated warming lamps, heaters, and other equipment while calling on the public to donate blankets and clothing to help animals stay warm through the winter. Students from the Textile and Clothing Department's Textile Design Program at Fu Jen Catholic University have also crafted adorable handwoven scarves, delivering heartfelt warmth to stray animals.
Integrating their professional knowledge with compassion, the students designed colorful scarves that are cozy and non-irritating. When worn, the scarves not only provide warmth but also make the animals look even more endearing. The animal protection office noted that the students' efforts not only keep the animals warm but also enhance their sociability and charm.Textile Design Students Knit Scarves to Keep Stray Animals Warm (Photo courtesy of New Taipei City Animal Protection Office)
Additionally, Banqiao Animal Shelter stated that they will closely monitor the conditions of the sheltered animals during the winter and provide them with blankets and clothing for warmth. The shelter urges the public to donate unused towels and blankets from their homes to help the animals through the cold months. They also encourage people to adopt rather than buy, giving these animals a loving home.
National animal hospitals have reminded the public that although dogs and cats have fur for protection, young and elderly animals are still vulnerable to the cold and require extra care. Common symptoms of hypothermia include shivering, fatigue, lethargy, and weakness. If not addressed in time, these conditions could pose serious risks. To keep pets safe and healthy during the winter, owners should provide blankets, appropriate clothing, a warm living environment, and sufficient food and water. With the cold wave approaching, the animal shelter prepares clothing to keep the dogs warm (Photo courtesy of New Taipei City Animal Protection Office).
Though the cold weather persists, the heartfelt actions of the animal protection office and students ensure that shelter animals won’t feel alone, as they all look forward to welcoming the New Year together.
