Upon entering the Douliu Sugar Factory, the most striking sight is the large-scale bamboo canopy structures and open spaces. Lightweight yet stable, these structures have become the most prominent new landscape within the former sugar factory grounds. The “Bamboo Creative Base × Bamboo Construction Academy” uses existing sugar industry relics as its backdrop, redefining the use of public space through bamboo, allowing walking, lingering, and resting to become experiences more closely connected to materials and the environment.
Various forms of bamboo construction can be seen throughout the site, ranging from large-scale structural works to detailed weaving techniques, comprehensively showcasing the potential of bamboo in architecture and design. Through full-scale displays, visitors can directly experience how bamboo structures bear loads, provide ventilation and shading, and more easily understand how bamboo can balance aesthetics, functionality, and environmental friendliness.

The base also plans exhibitions, guided tours, and hands-on experiences, ensuring that visits are not limited to viewing architecture alone, but gradually introduce the journey of bamboo from its source and processing to its applications. Combined with displays of bamboo crafts, lifestyle design, and related content, the entire site resembles an open textbook, naturally integrating sustainability and low-carbon concepts into the visitor route.
The Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency and the Yunlin County Government hope that through the long-term operation of the Douliu Sugar Factory Bamboo Creative Base, more people will come to recognize the contemporary value of domestically produced bamboo through on-site visits and experiences. In the future, as exhibitions, courses, and activities continue to be launched, this former sugar factory will keep accumulating new layers of everyday life, becoming a daily space that integrates culture, design, and sustainability concepts.
