An immigrant from Switzerland who is also a priest of the Bethlehem Mission Society

, Vonwyl Gottfried (魏主安), passed away recently. A memorial center for the priest has been set up in the Bethlehem Mission Society (天主教白冷外方傳教會) of Taitung. The farewell is to be held on February 19.

The history of Catholicism in Taiwan can be traced back to 1626. In addition to missionary missions, many churches today also assist the local community in their daily lives, as well as establish close ties with the indigenous people. The Bethlehem Mission Society originated from a Catholic religious order in Switzerland, referred to as Bethlehem. in

Founded in 1921, the mission area has expanded to Africa, Japan, the United States and Taiwan. The Bethlehem Society established a total of 54 churches in Taiwan and established many hospitals and schools.

Vonwyl Gottfried arrived in Taiwan in 1963. To have a deeper understanding of the local culture, he diligently learned Mandarin Chinese, Taiwanese, and Amis. He even received an honor for his contribution to the society in Taitung County and obtained a National Identification Card. His dedication to Taiwan is admirable.
