Chiayi Military Dependents' Village Food and Culture Festival Comforts Elders' Nostalgia by New Residents' Cuisines
Organized by West Chiayi Shirakawa Development Association and directed by the Chiayi City Government, the "2020 Military Dependents' Village Food and Culture Festival" was grandly held on the 18th at the Ximen Street Plaza in the Jingguo community. At the event, there were not only more than 20 stalls of traditional military dependents' village cuisines to comfort elders' homesickness but a majestic taiko drum performance and a saxophone performance which made many participants intoxicated in the music. Mayor of Chiayi City, Huang Minhui, also attended and invited the public to savor military dependents' village cuisines together.
Mayor Huang Minhui also states that Chiayi has two military dependents' villages: the Jingguo community and the Jingzhong community.
The West Chiayi Shirakawa Development Association at the Jingguo community has made great contributions to the development of the military dependents' village. Its devotion not only moves people but also makes people see the strengths of inheritance and the integration of many different cultures.
Chiayi City is a city composed of a diverse population that is inclusive of indigenous people, Zhangzhou and Quanzhou immigrants, Hakkas, mainlanders from other provinces who settled in Chiayi due to wars, and new residents who came to Taiwan and have been working hard for more than ten or twenty years. The beauty of diversity can be found in its food culture. We can savor the most classic Taiwanese dishes on streets, buy crisp Vietnamese spring rolls at corners and spicy Sichuan cuisines, and even the essence of Zhejiang cuisines are being well kept in Chiayi.
This event, "2020 Military Dependents' Village Food and Culture Festival", is jointly held by the Social Affairs Bureau, Chiayi City Government, West Chiayi Shirakawa Development Association, and several offices in the Jingguo community to promote military dependents' village's culture through cuisines and cultural relics to bring the best memories about military dependents' village.
