MOE holds “Start Speaking Our Mother Language Now” event, inviting French Taiwanese Remy Gils to be ambassador

“International Mother Language Day” is a global yearly event conducted on February 21 to raise awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity as well as multilingualism. UNESCO originally announced it on November 17, 1999.

To promote local languages in Taiwan, the Ministry of Education (MOE) held an event named “Start Speaking Our Mother Language Now” that echoes with the “International Mother Language Day”. A French Taiwanese - Remy Gils (吉雷米) was invited to participate in the press conference as an ambassador.

To promote minority languages in Taiwan, more than 50 programs will be held at ten libraries and community arts facilities this month. For example, “Reading Together GO, Taiwan Sign Language & Children's Picture Book Story Activity” will be organized by the National Taiwan Library. The story will be narrated in sign languages and Diversity & Inclusion games will be carried out.

In addition, Lianjiang County Government is holding “Let’s talk in Matsu dialect”, inviting all to join virtual activities and learn Southeast Asian languages from 7-9 pm on February 20 and 21. Make registration here.
