If Foreigner's Residence Permit Expires, They Must Apply for an Extension on the First Working Day After Chinese New Year

[Taiwan Immigrants’ Global News Network] This year’s Spring Festival has 10 consecutive days of holidays. Many new residents and friends are celebrating New Year in Taiwan. The Immigration Agency of the Ministry of the Interior stated that the special teams of municipalities and counties (cities) will not close during Chinese New Year and continue to provide services if foreigners in Taiwan encounter emergencies, and need assistance. For matters, you can ask the local dedicated team for help.

During Chinese New Year, if the validity of foreigner residence permits expires, the Ministry of the Interior reminds you to go to the service stations of the municipalities, counties and cities of the Immigration Agency to apply for extension of residence on the first working day after the holiday. Completing the application does not count as overstaying. If you are a foreign student who comes to Taiwan to study, you can also directly apply for an extension of residence online. 

The Ministry of the Interior stated that as for the measures for overdue foreigners who voluntarily report themself will still be accepted during the Chinese New Year. Overdue foreigners who voluntarily go to the special teams of the municipalities and counties (cities) of the Immigration Agency will be exempt from detention and after paying the overdue fine of 2,000 NTD to 10,000 NTD in accordance with the regulation, the special team will assist in the procedures of returning the person to their country.

In addition, the Ministry of the Interior also reminds the public that if there are foreigners who have overstayed, encourage them to take the initiative to report to the case on their own, so that he or she can return to their hometown and reunite with their families.
