Overseas Community Affairs Council, Republic of China (OCAC.R.O.C.) recently held an award ceremony for the “Overseas Chinese Students” Translation Contest." Li Jia Xin (李嘉欣), an overseas Chinese student and also a first-year student from the Department of Applied Foreign Languages at the National Taipei University of Business, won the championship in the Vietnamese category.
This year, the Southeast Asian language group is divided into Indonesian, Vietnamese, Burmese, and Thai categories. A total of 423 students from 76 colleges and universities participated in the competition.
In recent years, the Taiwan government has been promoting the New Southbound Policy that has attracted many outstanding foreign nationals to further their studies here. Therefore, OCAC.R.O.C. organized a contest to encourage overseas Chinese students to sharpen their language skills. This time, the competition is divided into 3 stages, including a short essay test, long essay translation, and Simultaneous Interpreting. Besides, the test covers topics of “overseas Chinese students’ daily life in Taiwan” and “experiences of pandemic prevention in Taiwan.”
Li Jia Xin from Vietnam mentioned that she started getting exposure to the Chinese language when she was studying in the second year of senior high school in Vietnam. Moreover, she also served as a docent-cum-interpreter during weekends. An article written by herself was even published on SGGP Online.

Li Jia Xin expressed her gratitude to OCAC.R.O.C. for holding this competition, as well as her parents for sending her to study in Taiwan. She has assessed her ability through taking the test and will continue to hone her language skills in the future.
