Taiwan Immigrants' Global News Network-Japanese & South Korean immigrants try 5 types of classic Taiwan snacks

Kazuki (河村一樹) from Nagoya, Japan has a lot of experience in acting in his hometown. To further develop his career, he chose to settle in Taiwan and learn the Chinese language at the same time. Besides, he also created the YouTube channel “Yi Ke Shu De Yi Shu” (一棵樹的一樹), sharing his daily life and the cultural differences between Taiwan and Japan. In this episode of the "New Immigrants in Taiwan" column, Kazuki introduced 5 Taiwan classic and popular snacks to his South Korean friend – Soyoun.

5 packets of Taiwan snacks were arrayed on the table, including “Guai Guai”, “Zhen You Wei”, “Ke Le Guo”, “Lang Wei Xian”, and “Oyster Omelet”. Since Soyoun likes to eat squid, they decided to try “Zhen You Wei” first.

“It smells delicious!” Soyoun opened the package and said in surprise.

“Let’s dig in!” Soyoun took out an orange-colored biscuit that resembles the foot of the squid and has a curly shape. After one bite, she mentioned that it tastes sweet and nice, and the shape of the biscuit really looks cute. She even recommended others to try it with Tabasco sauce.

Later, they took out the timeless Taiwan snack “Guai Guai”. Soyoun could smell the aroma of coconut while the snack was unpacked. After one bite of the crispy & light beige biscuit, she said, “It's like a Korean banana-flavored snack. I like it.”

For the “Ke Le Guo”, Soyoun said that it’s flavorful and mouthwatering. “Although there is a piece of garlic shown on the package, it doesn't have such a strong garlic taste, which is acceptable to those who don’t really eat snacks.”

Here comes the famous flavor from the night market – “Oyster Omelet”. “It smells like Japanese Okonomiyaki,” Soyoun said. “This represents Taiwan, you can have a taste of Taiwan night market food with just one bite, I love it!”

Lastly, Soyoun tried the veggie flavored snack “Lang Wei Xian”. She mentioned that this flavor is very light, so it is suitable for children. Kazuki concluded with a comment, "All the cookies are delicious, and all can be brought back to Japan as souvenirs for friends."
