Taiwan thanks Japan for COVID-19 vaccine donation

Japan ships 1.24 million doses of vaccine doses to Taiwan on June 4.

According to TAIWAN TODAY, Japan’s donation of 1.24 million doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine that arrived June 4 in Taiwan is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
In light of Taiwan’s recent spike in domestic coronavirus cases, Japan made the decision to provide vaccines to help the country curb the outbreak, the ministry said.

TAIWAN TODAY mentions, according to the MOFA, Taiwan and Japan have long held the practice of lending the other a helping hand in times of need. The ministry cited joint efforts to repatriate citizens on multiple occasions as notable examples of such cooperation.
During this year’s (2021) World Health Assembly held in May, Japan Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga as well as several ministers and officials from the country also publicly expressed support for the inclusion of Taiwan in all related activities, mechanisms and meetings of the World Health Organization, spotlighting the like-minded partners’ rock-solid relationship, the MOFA said.

TAIWAN TODAY says, Taiwan and Japan share the universal values of freedom and democracy, the ministry said. The government is committed to further bolstering the two countries’ long-standing friendship to meet challenges posed by the ongoing pandemic while strengthening public health cooperation to ensure global health security, the MOFA added.
