An immigrant from the United Kingdom, Allan, is running a YouTube channel named “lifeintaiwan” which reaches more than 20 million views, sharing everything interesting he has observed in Taiwan.
When he first arrived in Taiwan, he worked as an English teacher and now he is a full-time YouTuber. Allan is not like a student or tourist who only stays in Taiwan for a short time, he has been living in Taiwan for 14 years and has obtained a permanent residence. Now, he is a real “Taiwanese” as he rides motorbikes everywhere, and this habit is no different from that of Taiwanese.
In this episode of the “New Immigrants in Taiwan” column, Allan tried various Taiwanese vegetarian dishes within 24 hours and he was surprised with the choices available as well as the affordable prices.

“After 14 years living in Taiwan and 39 years on this earth as a meat eater, this is the first time I am experiencing a day in a life of a vegetarian.” Since Tian Ci came highly recommended from a friend of Allan, he decided to have breakfast in this vegetarian stall.
As someone who never tried vegetarian food, Allan asked the boss to prepare a selection of foods for him. Later, bowls of stir-fried noodles and soup, and plates of blanched vegetables and mixed vegetarian foods were served. All dishes only cost 150 TWD, and the dishes had amazed Allan. “Wow! That might be the best plate of vegetables I have eaten in my life in Taiwan.”

Allan then took a little bit of a journey across the city to North District to visit a restaurant “Jin Ding” that sells sushi. All the sushi is made using tofu, plants, and mushrooms, etc. “Everything I ate was absolutely delicious and deserved a round of applause,” he said with satisfaction.

The main event of the 24-hour vegetarian challenge was “vegan beyond meat” from a vegetarian restaurant “Vegfarm”. There were several different options of burger available such as BBQ burger, truffle burger and mushroom burger, and he went for the top of the range – truffle burger.
“This is amazing, those mushrooms really add to the Umami flavor, and the vegetarian beef tastes like meat,” Allan said. “I am gonna give that burger 10/10!”
