The 54-year-old Tao Hui grew up in a family of opera artists and won many Yue opera awards. In 2001, she got married to a Taiwanese. Unfortunately, her husband suffered a sudden acute stroke in 2006 and thus she had to become the pillar of the family and gave up playing Yue Opera. She was earning a livelihood by recycling for 11 years.

“I ever had thoughts on going back to my hometown,” she said. “But I decided to stay in Taiwan for my children as getting married overseas was my choice.”

With her mom’s encouragement, she started playing Yue Opera again in 2015 and even participated in a talent show on China’s CCTV. Her wonderful performance enabled her to be confident and won second place.

Some people asked Tao Hui if she wants to open classes and get apprentices. Therefore, she embarked on her journey of teaching the Yue Opera. Last year, Tao Hui received subsidies from Cultural Affairs Department, New Taipei City Government, and her story was adapted into a film and recorded in “New Taipei Community DevelopmentⅡ”(潮遊新北動社造Ⅱ). It is hoped that the video will encourage more people to not give up and chase their dreams.
