According to US Peace Corps volunteers arrive in PH | Inquirer News, the United States Embassy in Manila, a total of 37 volunteers from the 279th US Peace Corps have arrived in the Philippines for community development work and support across Luzon and Visayas.
The volunteers, according to the US Embassy, arrived in the country on January 30th at the invitation of the Philippine government to carry out tasks that include supporting local governments in establishing marine protected areas and coastal resource management plans, co-teaching the English language in public elementary and secondary schools, and acting as youth development facilitators in organizations accredited by the Department of Social Welfare and Development. Before being assigned to their permanent sites in Pampanga, Cebu, Bohol, Capiz, etc., the volunteers will complete two months of linguistic, technical, and cultural training.
According to Jenner Edelman, who is the US Peace Corps Country Director, the volunteers are excited to be the first group of American Peace Corps volunteers to visit the Philippines since the epidemic began. And they are well prepared for historic occasion with our personnel and community partners, she continued.
As the US Peace Corps cranks back up activities this year, more volunteers will arrive in the Philippines in May, August, and September, according to the US Embassy. Recall that the US Peace Corps withdrew its volunteers from all across the world in March 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 epidemic.
