[Taiwan Immigrants’ Global News Network] The Fisheries Agency and Tung Kang Fishermen's Association jointly created the "Shower room for foreign crew members in Donggang Fishing Port", providing foreign fishermen with hot water showers, religious prayers and rest.

Statistics show that there are more than 20,000 foreign workers and crew members, and many fishermen live on their boat due to their line of work. It was enthusiastically accepted when, in 2020, The Fisheries Agency and Tung Kang Fishermen's Association established a shower room with free hot baths for foreign crew members.

For NT$3.36 million, The Fisheries Agency redesigned the restroom and rest areas for foreign sailors and constructed three painted container cabins with additional prayer area and lounge behind the Yanpu Fishing Port Inspection Office which will be finished before the Lunar New Year.

Santosa, a representative of the Pingtung County Fishermen's Professional Union, stated during a speech that taking a bath was very inconvenient due to a lack of water. A place of prayer, where now dreams come true, which he is very grateful for.

According to Yance, the representative of Stella Maris-AOS International Migrants Service Center Taiwan gives hot water and makes fisherman who are drifting abroad feel at home. These are the basic requirements that all people have. Not all nations have this capability. The fisheries industry in Taiwan should be quite proud of this.

Director of the Fisheries Agency (劉福昇) indicates that because of the contribution that foreign crew members have made to Taiwan's fishery, the overall design of the rest area is based on human nature, and the painted exterior has a very laid-back vibe. As a result, he hopes that the foreign fishermen in Taiwan can celebrate the Lunar New Year together.

According to the director general of Donggang Fishermen’s Association (鄭鈺宸), the majority of the foreign sailors working at Donggang Yanpu Fishing Port are from Vietnam, Indonesia, and other nations. Statistics show that there were roughly 3,300 foreign sailors as of December of previous year. To fill the labor shortage in Taiwan's fishing industry, continue to meet the enormous demand for aquatic food, and keep fish prices stable, over half of the fishing boats must use foreign employees, and these crews have made significant contributions.
