National Defense Medical Center students strive to build a friendly environment for migrant workers

In cooperation with IC Voice FM97.5【New Students Report For Sharing -We are in Taiwan】, a series of exciting stories about new immigrants in Taiwan is launched. This episode invites a volunteer from Rumahku – Xu Jia Yu (許家瑜) to share about a group set up by medical students.

This group is an organization formed by students at the National Defense Medical Center. It cares about Southeast Asian migrant workers living in Taiwan and assists foreign caregivers working in social welfare units.

The number of migrant workers in Taiwan has exceeded 700,000, and they have made contributions to various industries. But what if they are injured or sick in a foreign country? In Taiwan, there is a group named Rumahku which has been lending a helping hand to migrant workers.

National Defense Medical Center students strive to build a friendly environment for migrant workers. At the same time, they also hope to have a positive influence on others while serving as the medical staff, encouraging everyone to care about migrant workers in Taiwan.

Xu Jia Yu mentioned that Rumahku means “My Home” in Indonesian. The group has been established for seven years and it has no sponsorship from any for-profit organization or government unit. It is only supported by group members of each batch.

The Rumahku volunteer group goes to the “Floor Library” of the Taipei Main Station on weekdays to understand migrant workers’ needs, and also conducts the “language exchange course” for foreign caregivers. Besides, three members of the group followed Indonesian migrant workers back to Indonesia and filmed the documentary “Going Home”.

In addition, the group has successfully added an Islamic prayer room for Indonesian caregivers after negotiations with The Tri-Service General Hospital. Moreover, group members also share medical knowledge with migrant workers in several locations, promote language exchange, and continue to carry out the program that makes the hospital a friendly environment for migrant workers.
