Kelsi from Canada made a Taiwanese friend in senior high school, and that was when her interest in Taiwanese idol dramas and pop music blossomed. She then embarked on her journey to learn Chinese from drama, TV series, and books by herself. In university, she applied for a scholarship to study the Chinese language in Taiwan and met her current husband Louis that summer. Now, she is an immigrant residing in Taiwan.

As a travel lover, Kelsi created a YouTube Channel - Kelsi May凱西莓, sharing tourist attractions and life in Taiwan. In this episode of the "New Immigrants in Taiwan" column, Kelsi traveled to Yunlin, Chiayi, and Tainan and visited sanheyuan, crystal church, and salt fields, as well as experienced collecting clams.

The first stop was the former residence of a famous Taiwanese author –Zheng Fengxi (鄭豐喜). One of his articles “A Boat in the Ocean” describes his struggles and inspirational stories as a physically handicapped person. The article was included in the primary school textbooks of Taiwan.

In the sanheyuan made of bricks, there are items that Zheng Fengxi once used, such as faded rattan chairs, a motorcycle with patches of rust, and old dusty oil lamps. His past life seemed vivid while observing those objects.

Kelsi said, “I think it’s interesting to see this type of traditional house as you don’t usually have the chance to visit someone’s house like this.”

During lunchtime, Kelsi and her husband arrived at the “Mangrove Clam Center”. The blue and white building shows the sea and beach vibes. After entering the restaurant, the two couldn't wait to taste the fresh and juicy seafood. Kelsi, who had never seen such a big mangrove clam, took a bite and said, “It's delicious, it's juicy!”

A leisure activity after a hearty meal is searching for clams in the sea. On the way to the fish farm, the facilities on both sides are decorated with shell ornaments. Kelsi held a basin in hand and stood in the water, enjoying the fun of exploring. She also sat on a colorful wooden boat and experienced the fun of boating with the children beside her. “I think it's a very special experience, and this place is suitable for family outings.”

The two then went to the “Jingzijiao Wapan Salt Fields” in Tainan, and learned the traditional way of drying, carrying, and collecting salt. During the sunset, the snow-white salt mountains, the pale orange sunlight, and the clouds are all reflected in the seawater, presenting a splendid view. The nearby tourist attraction “Crystal Church” is in white as the main color and the design is inspired by crystal salt, which is very elegant.
