The National Day fireworks will take place on Yuguang Island in the Anping District of Tainan City on Oct. 10.
An initial decision was made at a preparatory meeting on May 25 following Tainan’s application to host the display to showcase its recovery after a magnitude 6.4 earthquake in 2016, said Deputy Minister of the Interior Chen Tsung-yen (陳宗彥), who is secretary-general of the committee.
The Republic of China, the formal name of Taiwan, celebrates its National Day on Oct. 10, an occasion also known as Double Tenth Day.
Tainan City initially proposed five areas for the pyrotechnics display: Yuguang Island and Anping Port, Jiang Jyun Fishing Port and Qigu Salt Mountains, Dagang Sea View Bridge, and a high plains area besides Yanshuei River, National University of Tainan's Qigu campus and Cengwen River, Chen said.
Yuguang Island was chosen after considering safety requirements and the unimpeded view it offers spectators, he further said.
The four other sites were eliminated due to safety and environmental protection concerns, as three are located near residential or conservation areas, and the other is close to an oil depot, the press statement said.
The committee pointed out that some of the areas are unsuitable for setting off fireworks, as they are either residential areas or the natural habitat of the Platalea minor, also known as the black-faced spoonbill. Ultimately, the committee decided that Yuguang Island would be the best location for the event.
Yuguang Island is 400 hectares wide and located in the city's Anping District. Half of the area is covered by forest, and Moon Bay on the seaward side is a hot spot for tourists, according to the Travel Tainan website.
