According to COCONUTS MANILA, the Bureau of Customs through the Manila International Container Port (MICP) seized PHP3.2 million (US$66,000) worth of old clothes in Malibay, Pasay City, the bureau reported March 25.
The old clothes, which were supposed to be sold in markets called ukay ukay, were found in a storage facility. The owner of the clothes is still unknown, but he is set to face charges for possibly violating Section 1400 of Republic Act No. 10863 or the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act.

COCONUTS MANILA says,“The apprehension of ukay-ukay in Pasay marks the 2nd apprehension of MICP for the week as the Port also apprehended last March 23, 2021, Php48 million (US$988,000) worth of smuggled cigarettes from China which were declared as cartons, bicycles, and folding tables,” the bureau said.
It added that as the government continues tries to rehabilitate the economy amidst the pandemic, the MICP “remains committed to pursuing its mandate to secure the country’s borders from the entry of illegal goods.”
