At 8:00 a.m. local time on August 8, the wildfire began. The multi-day fire resulted in the burning of more than 2,200 buildings, 850 individuals were listed as missing, 114 people were confirmed dead, and 67 confirmed injured. The MOFA said that through the Taipei Economic & Cultural Office in Honolulu, it had aggressively contacted the Hawaii state government for donations, and that the funds would be utilized specifically for disaster relief and recovery.
According to MOFA, there has been a sister-state connection between Taiwan and Hawaii for the past 30 years. Taiwan expresses “Taiwan Can Help” that it can assist the victims in reclaiming their homes and returning regular lives as soon as possible.
