As Chinese New Year is around the corner, the Department of Social Affairs, Keelung City Government reminds employers not to assign works that are not within migrant workers’ job scope such as spring cleaning. Besides, please do not hire foreigners to work for others.

There are a total of 5,725 migrant workers in Keelung City, of which 3,478 are Indonesian migrant workers, accounting for 60% of the population of migrant workers. For the types of work, there are 3,327 family caregivers, 695 fishermen, and the remaining 1,703 are working in industries.
Wu Ting Feng (吳挺鋒), the Director of the Department of Social Affairs, Keelung City Government, said that assigning works that are not within migrant workers’ job scope leads to penalties and fines. He also mentioned that hiring migrant workers should be made through legal channels. Do not violate the law because of the urgent need to avoid mistakenly employing foreigners illegally residing in Taiwan.

Wu Jun Cheng (吳鈞城), the commander of the Keelung City Brigade, promotes the “Carefree Covid-19 Vaccination Program” that encourages foreign nationals such as undocumented migrant workers and overstayers to receive free vaccination. The program adopts four principles, “won’t be reported”, “won’t be seized”, “won’t be charged for any fee”, “won’t be banned” and it will last until January 31, 2022. At present, about 80 overstayers have been assisted in getting vaccinated. It is hoped that everyone will get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.
The Workforce Development Agency, Ministry of Labor reminds employers and agencies to inform migrant workers that if any urgent issues are happening during the Chinese New Year, they can dial the 24-hour 1955 Hotline or Keelung Brigade for help.
