Free legal advice is provided every month at the Kaohsiung New Immigrants Hall

To provide a more friendly and convenient channel of legal advice, the Social Affairs Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government, Legal Affairs Bureau and Research, Development and Evaluation Commission, Executive Yuan, and Law Society provide free legal advice on the last Saturday of every month. The location is at the New Immigrants Hall and it is hoped to assist immigrants in solving various legal problems.

Immigrants may face cultural & language differences and have no knowledge of laws and regulations in Taiwan. Once they encounter consumer disputes, scams, inheritance, custody of the child, traffic accidents, etc., they do not know how to seek help. Therefore, legal advice is specially offered.

For instance, an immigrant – A Miao’s children is a minor. Her child was sued for stealing after being incited by a friend to do so. A Miao was worried about her minor’s future and was helpless as she couldn’t express herself in Chinese well.

Fortunately, A Miao received free legal advice with help from social workers, and a pro bono lawyer help her child to get sanctions in her favor. This case shows the importance of legal advice services for immigrant families.

Social Affairs Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government stated that there are currently more than 64,000 immigrants in Kaohsiung City which has become the second home for immigrants. The legal advice services can be booked by phone calls, and immigrants will be accompanied by an interpreter to facilitate efficient communication.
