According to The Star, even though there are few in-depth discussions on the exact diet of dogs in the past, one thing is certain: It is unlikely that the Chinese emperors who imported Pekingese sleeve dogs didn't share gourmet food with their four-legged friends.

In the 19th century, the first prepared dog foods were introduced. Several manufacturers started producing food in large numbers. There are records of early biscuits and dried goods produced for travelers at sea – pet owners.

A "biscuit" made with wheat flour, vegetables, and beef blood, as well as colored with beetroot in 1860 is credited as the first commercially manufactured pet food. Spratt's biscuits were perhaps not the best eating option given the ingredients. In fact, catering to dogs is an extremely challenging endeavor.

Dogs cannot eat a lot of human foods, including grapes and chocolate. Additionally, a diet that is edible to humans frequently fails to be edible to dogs. After all, we are distinct species. There are countless brands of commercial dog food available today. Some are based on scientific research, while others are not. Always read the label, and if you're unsure, consult your veterinarian.
