[Taiwan Immigrants’ Global News Network] National Immigration Agency launched “Expanded Overstayers Voluntary Departure Program” from February 1st to June 30th this year. Those who "self-report" during the program period will be given a "lenient" punishment, includes no detention, minimum fine of NT$2,000 and exemption of entry ban.

Jin and Yan, two disconnected female migrant workers from Vietnam who lost currently learned about the program from friends and took the initiative to self-report at the NIA Chiayi City Specialized Corps. Jin told the immigration officer, that she was dubious and afraid that she will be imprisoned after self-reporting. It was not until the immigration officer explained in detail the "Expanded Overstayers Voluntary Departure Program" that she gradually relaxed.

Jin, who came to Taiwan and worked as a caregiver but chose to lose contact because she could not bear the pressure of work. However, her part-rime jobs could not make much money. And she has not seen her children for 3 years. Jin contacted her fellow Yan to self-report together after learned "Expanded Overstayers Voluntary Departure Program."

The director of Chiayi City Specialized Corp appeals to overstaying migrant workers and foreigners, to seize the opportunity or this program and self-report as soon as possible. National Immigration Agency has set up a free consultation hotline 0800-024-881 (ByeBye) for this program, which provides multi-language services. Citizens and foreigners who have overstayed (resident) can also use this hotline to inquire.
