In order to address the labor shortage, Executive Yuan recently called a meeting where it was agreed that foreign students will soon be allowed to stay in Taiwan for one year after graduating, with the option of an additional year if necessary.

Lin, Yu-Chang, the Minister, Ministry of the Interior stated that in the future foreign students can stay in Taiwan for up to two years after graduation.

About 24,000 international students study in Taiwan each year, according to Lin, Yu-Chang, the Minister, Ministry of the Interior. Following graduation, they are permitted to remain in Taiwan for a period of six months in order to look for employment; however, they are required to earn at least NT$42,500 per month. In recent months, the administration has engaged in extensive discussion. A special meeting on population concerns has been convened by the Ministries of the Interior, National Development Council, Ministry of Economic Affairs, and Ministry of Labor to address relevant issues. According to Lin, Yu-Chang, the administration has discussed and made adjustments in response to the issue of a labor shortage. The future course of immigration policy will be substantially different.
