Dada Kim (金多多), a girl from South Korea, is residing in Tainan. She created a YouTube Channel named “Walk around with Dada Kim” with her Taiwanese boyfriend. The videos mainly focus on food and travel sharing, as well as record her enthusiasm for life.

In this episode of the “New Immigrants in Taiwan” column, Dada Kim and her boyfriend visited the southernmost point of Taiwan – Pingtung, tasted hearty rice soup, and tried a specialty of the house which is ice dessert.

Dada Kim arrived in Wandan Township, Pingtung – the largest red bean producing region in Taiwan. The specialties include red bean pastry, sweetened red beans and red bean cakes which are tourists’ favorite snacks.

“Everything is at 10 dollars, that’s so cheap!” Dada Kim walked into a red bean cake shop with a history of more than 40 years. The shop proprietor insists on using the best red beans planted by himself and adopts a traditional approach to making red bean fillings.

The cake crust has a nice and chewy texture. Together with the rich red bean paste, the delicious taste made Dada Kim say, “That’s really nice and aromatic!”

Later, Dada Kim and her boyfriend visited a stall with no name but only a flag placed in front of the storefront. The words “No. 1 Rice Soup in Wannei Village, Wandan” are printed on the flag, representing the award won by the proprietress in 2002. Because of the award, the stall had become famous ever since, and there were always long queues in the storefront.

“That smells nice!” Dada Kim couldn’t wait to try the traditional rice soup and immediately ordered one bowl. The portion was generous, and it was rich in ingredients, including rice, chicken, pork, fish, cabbage, etc. Besides, bone broth was also added to make the dish more flavorful. “The meal is very nutritious and I’m so full.”

Lastly, Dada Kim came to a 60-year-old ice shop named A Ji Bo. She was there to try the signature dessert “Burning & Cold Ice.” The bottom layer of the dessert was filled with hot ingredients – red beans, barley, taro, and handmade tang yuan. It was then covered with a thick layer of shaved ice, and then it was done with sugar toppings.

“Wandan is really the hometown of red beans, all red beans taste so nice here!” Dada Kim couldn’t resist the wonderful taste of red beans, so she ordered another bowl of red bean soup with tang yuan. “Every bite is so satisfying!”
