Outstanding immigrants in Taiwan - Nguyễn Thu Hằng (Vietnam)
This is the 11th year that Nguyễn Thu Hằng has been in Taiwan. She has a new identity, from being a new immigrant, Taiwanese wife to a mother of the second new immigrant generation.
As a poor villager from North Vietnam, Nguyễn Thu Hằng said, “My mom came to Taiwan working as a caregiver when I was little.” Nguyễn Thu Hằng has been through a period of loss when she graduated from senior high school. She would stay in the Internet cafe 24 hours playing games. She even went into a fight and got caught at the police station. When she got home, her father told her sincerely, “How could you do this to your mother who works so hard in Taiwan?” It gave her young and confused heart a head up. Therefore, with the support from Nguyễn Thu Hằng’s mother, she decided to come to Taiwan to study Chinese.
Nguyễn Thu Hằng planned to stay in Taiwan for a year to study Chinese so that she probably could work as a translator in the Taiwanese factory when she is back in Vietnam. She has no idea that she would become a Taiwanese wife and stay here for 11 years.
Nguyễn Thu Hằng and her husband, Li Jia Yang started to shoot videos teaching Vietnamese five years ago. They created a YouTube Channel called,【Hang TV - 越南夯台灣】to introduce Taiwan and Vietnam’s culture. It is because of this channel that Nguyễn Thu Hằng becomes the most renowned new immigrant influencer in Taiwan.
After receiving popularity, Nguyễn Thu Hằng vigorously wants to exert her power to introduce Taiwan to Vietnam audience. She creates another sub-channel with Vietnamese pronunciation, 【Hằng's - Đài Loan từ A-Z】. It attracts many young Vietnamese to apply for schooling in Taiwan. Nguyễn Thu Hằng even serves herself as a senior for guidance eagerly and helps many Vietnam students who just come to study abroad in Taiwan.
Nguyễn Thu Hằng has been invited to Vietnam and Canada to promote Taiwan many times. She was selected as a host for the National Day of the Republic of China in 2018. Nguyễn Thu Hằng’s life story has been adapted into a play and represented on the stage. Besides it is being put on in Taiwan, the play is translated into Vietnamese and performed in Vietnam. It also is translated into German and is displayed in Germany.
In 2021, she was invited to participate in a TV program and shortlisted for the 56th Gold Bell Awards - Newcomer With the Most Potential Award on her first performance. She receives acclamation in BIFF (Busan International Film Festival) with her first big-screen experience on “Days Before the Millennium”.
Nguyễn Thu Hằng’s striving story in Taiwan has become the best example for Vietnam students and immigrants. Because of Nguyễn Thu Hằng, Vietnam and Taiwan have built another new bridge. The world would be able to perceive Taiwan from another perspective through Nguyễn Thu Hằng, a new immigrant from Vietnam.
