Since the emergence of COVID-19 around the world, cities are stuck in the cyclical repetition of locking down and opening up. Consequently, many found staying home to be the preferable option. However, multiple research has indicated that an increasing number of people are suffering from common symptoms of stress as a result of being home bound. These symptoms include, but are not limited to, tiredness, mood swings, and irregular sleep pattern. The uncertainty surrounding the future of the pandemic, combining with professional and/or scholastic pressure, has seen many of the aforementioned ailments exacerbated to disrupted sleep and menstrual cycle to many around the world.

Experts have suggested that the cause of sleep deprivation are varied. Remote work has often been cited as a contributing cause to inconsistent schedules and habits. As a result, irregularities in work, leisure, and supper hours has often blurred the lines between a productive environment and a relaxing backdrop.

Angela Drake, a professor of clinical health from the University of California, suggested that daily exercise and a dose of sunshine stands as a tried-and-true method to tackle sleep deprivation. Moreover, women are more susceptible to the negativities of sleep deprivation, given the correlation between sleep pattern and biological rhythm. As such, a disrupted biological clock would often contribute to worsened PMS symptoms such as headaches, stomachaches, and irritation.

Lastly, experts has asserted that awareness towards the biological impact of emotional stress under the pretext of a global pandemic should be raised, given that such experiences are not unique to any individual. Similarly, the current pandemic may offer us a chance to reevaluate our relationship with stress, as maintaining emotional and physical balance if often the key to leading a healthy lifestyle.
