Student from China finds the warmth of Taiwanese people via trivial matters in her daily life

LIAO HAISHAN (廖小花) from Guangdong, China, is now pursuing a master's degree in the Department of Chinese Language and Literature. At the same time, she also created a YouTube Channel "Liao Xiao Hua (廖小花)" to share her daily life residing in Taiwan. What makes her YouTube videos unique is that she observes and discovers people and things around her and sees things from different perspectives.

LIAO HAISHAN has been living in Taiwan since 2016. At first, she decided to study in Taiwan because of her love for Taiwanese music and films. After residing in Taiwan for several years, she has stronger feelings for Taiwan as she lives and grows here.

In the beginning, LIAO HAISHAN writes articles on a WeChat official account to share her life experiences. With the rise of videos on social media, she began to film and edit videos by using her mobile phone. Usually, she would not write scripts for videos, but she would just film trivial things she encountered, enabling her to have many inspirations.

In this episode of the “New Immigrants in Taiwan” column, LIAO HAISHAN climb the Four Beasts Hiking Trail (四獸山步道) and was curious about a bulge on the road covered with leaves. She mentioned that what is under the leaves are faeces, and the leaves are to remind others not to step on it accidentally.

She knows about this is because she encountered this 2 years ago. This also makes her think that the leaves are to make the faeces more noticeable and prevent others from stepping on them. It is also more convenient for the cleaning staff to clean them up. From this trivial matter, LIAO HAISHAN found the warmth of Taiwanese who care about others a lot.
