Egyptian immigrant promotes traditional dances of his hometown in Taiwan

In cooperation with IC Voice FM97.5【New Students Report For Sharing -We are in Taiwan】, a series of exciting stories about new immigrants in Taiwan is launched. This episode invites the second generation of an immigrant from Egypt – Mohamed Mmadoh (何穆). 

His proficiency in dancing enabled him to be a member of the Egyptian National Dance Troupe. After falling in love with a Taiwanese, they got married and decided to reside in Chaozhou Town, Pingtung County. Mohamed Mmadoh, who moved to Taiwan for living with his wife, said, “Where your lover is, where your country is.”

The married couple has been promoting Egyptian cultures in Taiwan, including traditional dance and belly dance. They found that the Taiwanese had little knowledge about Egypt-related affairs or exotic dances. Therefore, Mohamed Mmadoh would introduce customs, traditional costumes, and dances of Egypt to the students before lessons started.

Besides, he also set up a dance troupe named “Tw-Egy Folk Troupe” in Taiwan, and it participated in Hsinchu Light Coming Art Festival in 2021. Following the music, the members spun and swayed their bodies while donning luminous & traditional clothing. The performance was awe-inspiring.  

In 2019, the dance troupe was also invited as a representative of East Asian countries to participate in international performances. It includes traditional dances of Taiwan's aborigines to promote the multiculturalism of Taiwan to the world.

The Ministry of Culture organized the “Immigrants’ Arts and Culture Promotion and Community Development Project” this year. The married couple has proposed a plan, hoping that through community building, the Taiwanese would be able to know more about Egypt.
