According to The Straits Times, Thailand's Covid-19 alert level was upgraded on Thursday (January 6) due to an increase in infections caused by the spread of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.
The move from level three to level four creates a pretext for additional measures, such as the closure of high-risk areas and restrictions on domestic travel and public gatherings.

"Thailand is experiencing a new wave of infections, with new cases increasing rapidly," said Dr. Kiattiphum Wongrajit, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health. "At level four, we may close high-risk locations and announce additional steps."
The decision comes in the wake of a substantial increase in everyday infections since the start of the year.
