Goodbye language barriers: The Labor Affairs Bureau Taichung City Government sets up multilingual consultation service centers for migrant workers

With over 105,000 migrant workers in Taichung City, the Labor Affairs Bureau Taichung City Government set up consultation services for migrant workers to protect their rights. There are translators familiar with Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, and English.

The consultation services make communication with migrant workers easier and get rid of language barriers. Migrant workers can now seek counseling in matters relating to their employers, life, work, and psychological issues.

The Labor Affairs Bureau Taichung City Government stated that in accordance with the relevant provision of the Employment Service Act, migrant workers must seek approval from the Ministry of Labor (MOL) to work in Taiwan and to switch employers. If contracts with employers are terminated, or if employers have been chances, the staff of the consultation services center will inquire about the situation from the employees' perspective and provide assistance in accordance with the regulations of the MOL.

For migrant workers waiting to switch employers, the local city government states the during the conversion period, the employer is unable to properly take care of employees. The provisions of the Employment Service Act, Article 46, Paragraphs 1, and 8 to 11 "Key points for the temporary settlement of working foreigners" stipulate that settlement is provided to protect the rights and interests of migrant workers.

If employers and migrant workers encounter difficulties in communication, they can contact the consultation service centers for assistance.
