Xiaohui (小薈) from Singapore traveled to Taiwan with friends in 2014 for the New Year's Eve countdown. Because of her friend, she met her Taiwanese husband Dandan (丹丹) and decided to live in Taiwan after marriage.
The two created the YouTube Channel “Dan Dan & Xiao Hui (丹丹與小薈)” that introduces the customs, cultures, values, and differences between Taiwanese and Singaporean food. The audiences therefore would have a better understanding of cultural differences between the two places.
In this episode of the “New Immigrants in Taiwan” column, Xiaohui and Dan Dan bring audiences to have a taste of Nanyang cuisine in Taipei and at the same time to satisfy her cravings for hometown food. The recommended restaurants are as follows.

The first one is "Sister's Café (大姊的店新加坡料理)" in New Taipei City. As a Singaporean, Xiaohui expressed that the Bak Kut Teh of "Sister's Café" is made of vegetables, mushrooms, and many other ingredients. It tastes just like the taste of home because she also put in similar ingredients while making Bak Kut Teh at home.
The second one is "Lin Kee Hainanese Chicken Rice (林記海南雞飯)" in Taipei City. After eating the soup of Bak Kut Teh, Xiaohui said that the taste is a bit different from that in Singapore as the taste of pepper is not that strong. However, the meat tenderness makes it easier to be chewed and swallowed. Besides, the chicken and sauces of Hainanese Chicken Rice are quite authentic, so I recommend it to those who want to try Hainanese Chicken Rice.

Lastly, Xiaohui and Dan Dan recommend the "Chi Xian Sheng Kopitiam (池先生Kopititam)" in Taipei City. She ordered Nasi Lemak (椰漿飯) - the signature Malaysian dish of this restaurant. The side dishes and garnishing & food presentation are very similar to the ones in Singapore as there are boiled eggs, anchovies, cucumbers, and chicken nuggets. The banana leaves on the side enhance the aroma of the dish. The chicken nuggets are crispy and the coconut milk flavor in the rice is very rich, making Xiaohui nod and scream that the food is so delicious.
To end the meal on a high note, they tried a popular dessert in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia – Cendol (煎蕊). Both Xiaohui and Dan Dan agreed that they like the meal of this restaurant the most and they really recommended it to the audiences who miss the taste of Nanyang.
