Mike Grossman was certain he wouldn’t fall for anyone in Australia. He planned to be in Melbourne for a short time before returning to his life in the US. However, his mother questioned what he would do if he met someone. He was adamant that wouldn’t happen.

In 1988, Mike, a Harvard Law student, arrived in Melbourne to work for a few months. Though introverted, he pushed himself to be social. At a Friday work event, Mike met Wati Abdurrachman, a young lawyer. Their connection was immediate, sparking a romance neither anticipated.Wati and Mike started socializing together after their first meeting and enjoyed each other's company. Mike and Wati Grossman

Despite their different backgrounds—Mike was an American Jew and Wati an Indonesian Muslim—their shared values and deep connection brought them closer. Their relationship grew, and although Mike had to return to the US, they maintained a long-distance relationship, relying on letters, phone calls, and tapes to stay connected.

Mike soon returned to Australia, solidifying their bond. Despite initial challenges and the distance, they were determined to make their relationship work, recognizing the unique connection they shared.
