There are various Valentine's Days celebrated in the world, including Chinese Valentine's Day, Western Valentine's Day, and White Day. In this episode of the “New Immigrants in Taiwan” column, immigrants from the Netherlands, Switzerland, Japan, and Italy shared how couples from different countries spent their days, as well as their own special experiences during this romantic holiday.

“Although we didn't have a lot of money at that time, we were still really happy,” Kazuki from Japan said with a sweet smile.
Reminiscing about his valentine’s days celebrated in Japan, he often went to see magnificent illuminations with his girlfriend. A sea of colored decorative lights, the special designs, and grand light shows make the exhibition area starry at night. Such spots have also become a great choice for Japanese couples to have unique memories. Besides, Kazuki also shared that he and his girlfriend have taken a night bus to Tokyo Disneyland on Valentine's Day before.
Lin Kai En, an immigrant from Italy, said, “Italian couples would lock two locks on the bridge and then throw the key into the river, indicating that they will be together forever.” In addition, Italians often eat tiramisu on Valentine's Day. The name of this dessert means “take me away”, which is very sweet.

An immigrant from the Netherlands, Myrthe Jonker, disproved the myth online that the best gift to give on Valentine's Day in the Netherlands is “klompen”, which is not necessarily true. She also mentioned that besides flowers and chocolates, beer and whisky are also good choices of gift for Dutchmen.

Xiao An from Switzerland mentioned, “Swiss men give women flowers and chocolates that are largely produced in Switzerland.”
She also shared a story between herself and her boyfriend. She used to be in a long-distance relationship with her Taiwanese boyfriend and had once received a handmade booklet full of photos and handwritten text, which was heartwarming for her.
