The deputy representative of the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO, 菲律賓馬尼拉經濟文化辦事處), Gilbert Lauengco, officially took over as the Philippine representative in Taiwan. Prior to this, he has served as an agent representative to help promote the relationship between the Philippines and Taiwan. Lauengco said that his top priority is to promote the welfare and safety of the Philippine migrant workers in Taiwan, and to strengthen economic, trade and agricultural cooperation between the Philippines and Taiwan. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA, 外交部) welcomes this personnel arrangement and hopes to continue to deepen the friendship and cooperative relations between Taiwan and the Philippines.

The MOFA also stated that as deputy representative, Lauengco actively assisted in promoting various cooperation and exchanges between Taiwan and the Philippines and was familiar with related businesses. The MOFA expects that with the existing mutually beneficial cooperation between Taiwan and the Philippines, representative Lauengco will continue to deepen the various important friendly and cooperative relations between the two sides, so that the "New Southbound Policy" (新南向政策) promoted by Taiwan will further enhance the friendship and well-being of the peoples of the two countries.

Lauengco mentioned his priority work items, to take care of the welfare and safety of 150,000 Filipino migrant workers in Taiwan, and the other is to expand economic and trade exchanges between the Philippines and Taiwan. He plans to provide land, simplify investment procedures, visa applications and other measures to invite more Taiwanese businessmen to invest in the Philippines. In addition, agricultural cooperation will be another important item. When the epidemic eases, Lauengco hopes to send Filipino students to Taiwan to learn agricultural skills, establish more Taiwan demonstration farms in the Philippines, and promote agricultural technology exchange missions and other projects.
