Broccoli, rich in dietary fiber and various vitamins, has become a common ingredient in many households. Not only is it nutritious, but it also has anti-cancer benefits, making it a favorite among consumers. However, broccoli tends to retain pesticides and insect eggs, raising concerns about how to clean it effectively. In response to this issue, Taipei Agricultural Products Marketing Corporation (TAPMC) has provided a simple and effective cleaning method to help consumers eat broccoli with more peace of mind.

According to nurse Tang Dunci from the Clinical Toxicology Center at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, as stated on the “Health 2.0” program, using salt, vinegar, or baking soda to clean vegetables is not an effective way to remove pesticides. She explained that pesticides are complex compounds, and the neutralization effect of acids and bases is limited. Additionally, salt can alter osmotic pressure, possibly driving the pesticides deeper into the vegetable and increasing toxicity. Tang Dunci emphasized that experiments have shown rinsing with clean water is the most effective method.

TAPMC shared a simple three-step cleaning process on their Facebook page specifically for broccoli, which effectively removes pesticides and insect eggs:

  1. 1. Soaking and washing: Submerge the entire broccoli in running water and gently rinse to allow the pesticides and impurities to float away.
  2. 2. Quick rinsing: Hold the stem and quickly move the broccoli in and out of the water to wash away any small insects clinging to it.
  3. 3. Cut and rinse: Cut the broccoli into appropriate sizes and rinse again with clean water to further remove any remaining insect eggs and pesticides.

By following these simple steps, consumers can enjoy broccoli with greater peace of mind, ensuring the safety and healthiness of their food.3 steps to clean broccoli: rinse, soak, cut into pieces (Photo / Sourced from Taipei Agriculture Facebook)
