Is Having a Cramp When Sleeping Because of Calcium Deficiency? Doctor Says: Emotional Stress

Many people have the experience of getting a cramp when sleeping, especially when it has been getting colder, the situation of people waking up with the pain of cramps has also become frequent. Rumor has it that the reason for it is the deficiency of calcium; hence, calcium supplements help avoid getting a cramp. However, doctors remind that not everyone's foot cramps are caused by calcium deficiency. If the symptoms do not improve, people should seek medical advice and won't be misled into trusting home remedies to delay medical treatments.

The director of the Shutien Family Medicine Department, He Yicheng, states that there are many causes of cramps that need to be fixed with specific antidotes. It is not everyone's cramps that come from calcium deficiency. Apart from the common causes include bad circulations, neuropathy, emotional stress, changes in temperature, or other physiological factors, a lack of minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, in food might also lead to foot cramps.

Dr. He Yicheng reminds us that people should not excessively exercise if they would easily get cramps, but proper exercises and moderate exercises are okay. Fast walking, jogging, swimming for 30 minutes each day, stretching your legs where you would get cramps, and keeping your legs warm might protect you from getting cramps again.

People should avoid excessive sagging of the footboards because if the footboards excessively droop towards the soles of the foot, people would easily get cramps. Besides, if cramps happen too often, it is recommended that further evaluations through the physical diagnosis, blood or blood mineral test by doctors may save you from more serious pain.
