According to The Star, following an increase in the number of new infections connected to the development of the Omicron strain, Thailand upped its Covid-19 alert level to the second highest rung on Monday.

To contain the spread of the virus, the Ministry of Public Health upped the Covid-19 alert level from 3 to 4, a category that includes prohibitions prohibiting dining or drinking in restaurants and avoiding public gatherings.

Department of Disease Control of Thailand stated that the number of cases infected with the Omicron subtype variant BA.2 increased by 50%. The BA.2 virus is about 1.4 times more transmissible than the BA.1 virus. Both viruses are currently spreading rapidly in Thailand. The latest research from a Japanese laboratory has found that BA.2 is not only more transmissible than other variant such as Delta, but also more likely to cause severe illness than others.
