Smartwatches are becoming an essential part of fitness and health routines, with over a quarter of the US population using them in 2023. By 2026, it's projected that more than 100 million Americans will wear smart devices for health tracking. But can they truly detect heart issues like irregular heart rhythms or heart attacks?

CNN spoke with Dr. Leana Wen, an emergency physician and wellness expert, to answer these questions. Dr. Wen emphasized that while smartwatches are great for tracking exercise, steps, and heart rate, they are not approved to diagnose heart attacks. If symptoms like chest pain occur, immediate medical attention is necessary, regardless of smartwatch readings.CNN Underscored

Regarding heart rhythm, some smartwatches claim to detect atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart rhythm that increases the risk of stroke. However, smartwatches should not replace medical-grade equipment, and those advised by doctors to use specific heart monitoring devices should follow professional guidance.
