For humans, achieving flexibility might seem daunting, but it’s possible with consistent stretching and strength-building, according to Dr. Ashley Cruz, founder of Cruz Chiropractic Wellness. Flexibility allows muscles to stretch without damage, a crucial factor in maintaining movement, especially as we age. The body's need for flexibility increases with age due to reduced collagen production, making injury prevention essential. Flexibility training involves neuromuscular reeducation, where the brain and nerves guide muscles in new movements, ensuring safety over time. The cat-cow stretch can also make your midback more flexible. fizkes/iStockphoto/Getty Images

Experts recommend stretches such as the cat-cow for hips and back, downward dog for hamstrings, and happy baby for the pelvic area. Regular stretching, ideally daily, can yield results within weeks. Dynamic stretching, or moving through a range of motion, is beneficial for beginners, while holding each stretch for 15–30 seconds works well for all. Stretching also offers added benefits, including stress relief, enhanced body awareness, improved posture, and increased blood flow, contributing to overall physical and mental wellness.
