Coughing is a common issue that many people encounter in their daily lives. When coughing is mentioned, many might instinctively think of a cold. However, coughing is not just a symptom of a cold; it can be caused by various other factors. If a cough persists for more than two weeks, it's essential to pay attention to its nature and seek medical advice promptly to rule out potential health problems. Here are six possible causes of coughing.Gastroesophageal reflux is also a potential cause of coughing. (Image / Courtesy of Heho Health)

Firstly, respiratory and lung diseases such as tuberculosis, chronic pharyngitis, tracheitis, bronchitis, and obstructive pulmonary disease often come with symptoms like phlegm and wheezing. In the case of lung cancer, more severe symptoms like blood-tinged sputum and difficulty breathing may occur.

Secondly, gastroesophageal reflux is also a potential cause of coughing. In this situation, patients often feel chest tightness, and chest pain, and may experience persistent coughing and hoarseness. Acid reflux tends to worsen when lying down, and morning symptoms might include bad breath and dry mouth.

Thirdly, postnasal drip is another major cause of coughing and can result from allergic rhinitis, colds, chronic rhinitis, or sinusitis. Particularly for sinusitis patients, whether acute or chronic, pus dripping down the throat can trigger coughing.

Fourthly, allergic cough tends to recur, and when the patient is exposed to allergens, persistent coughing ensues. This type of cough is often mistaken for a cold or pneumonia, leading to missed opportunities for optimal treatment and potentially developing into asthma.Identify the cause based on coughing symptoms. Fifthly, throat dryness or excessive use of the voice can lead to throat swelling and chronic inflammation, which may also cause coughing. Additionally, menopausal women experiencing dry mouth are prone to coughing.

Lastly, asthma does not always present with wheezing as the primary symptom; chronic coughing and chest tightness are also common manifestations. These symptoms often worsen during sleep at night, making it difficult for patients to fall asleep.

In summary, there are many potential causes of coughing. If a cough persists for more than two weeks, it's crucial to seek medical attention promptly to identify the underlying cause and avoid missing the optimal time for treatment.
