The “Chiayi Beautiful Streets Atlas” launched last year by the Chiayi City Industry Development Association received great acclaim. Continuing the spirit of this brand, a press conference was held at the Chiayi Chenghuang Temple on the evening of September 27 to announce the official return of the “Chiayi Beautiful Streets Atlas” this October. Chiayi City Mayor Huang Min-hui attended the event and led the city government team, along with city councilors and distinguished guests, on a night tour of the old city district, visiting locations such as Chenghuang Temple, Shuangzhong Temple, Dong Market, and Sheng’an Tang Herb Store. The event showcased the charm of Chiayi’s nighttime scenery and invited tourists to experience the city’s rich history and small-town allure.Chiayi City Mayor Huang Min-hui led the city government team, along with city councilors and guests, on a night tour of the Chenghuang Temple (Photo: Retrieved from Chiayi City Government Website).
Huang Min-hui stated that last year’s “Chiayi Beautiful Streets Atlas” connected local shops and the old city district, allowing the public to explore Chiayi’s historic streets and create beautiful memories. It successfully won the 11th Taiwan Landscape Award and was recognized as one of the 2023 Taiwan Design BEST 100. This year, the “Chiayi Beautiful Streets Atlas” will continue this “beautiful” momentum, focusing on the street districts around Lanjing Street in Chiayi City. Through design integration and technological innovation, the event will guide visitors to discover the city’s rich religious and commercial culture.
Lanjing Street, named after its landmark “Red-Haired Well” (also known as Lanjing Well), is believed to have been dug during the Dutch colonial period. The area is a significant religious and commercial center of the old city, near historical buildings such as the Chiayi Chenghuang Temple and Shuangzhong Temple. Following the city government’s old house renovation project, the streets are now illuminated at night, presenting a unique evening landscape.
Secretary General of the Industry Development Association, Hsu Yao-hong, introduced this year’s event, which combines digital applications, including a stamp-collecting booklet connecting 20 shops. By scanning a QR code, visitors can also experience online fortune-telling guidance. The event also invited lantern master Tsou Hung-yi to hand-paint lanterns and launched the “Orange Lantern Movement” to encourage shop collaboration and mutual prosperity through gift redemption for stamp collections. Additionally, the event features bamboo lanterns, scented herb sachets, the Chenghuang Temple Exhibition Zone, and eight other highlights, providing visitors with a fresh experience.Connecting 20 Shops, Inviting the Public to Visit (Photo: Retrieved from Chiayi City Government Website).
Hsu Yao-hong emphasized that this project will build on last year’s success and present Chiayi City’s unique culture and lifestyle to more visitors through the “beauty” of this brand, creating beautiful memories that belong to Chiayi.
The “Chiayi Beautiful Things Atlas” will rediscover and present the fusion of new and old generations, blending traditional stories with new vitality. The project connects the young and elderly generations, allowing Chiayi’s stories to be seen and appreciated. Visitors who collect stamps from all 20 participating shops can receive limited-edition souvenirs.
