“Migrant Worker Salon” in SEAMi to Share Stories of New Immigrats

[Taiwan Immigrants’ Global News Network] Located in Taoyuan City, SEAMi (South East Asia Migrant inspired) provides a large number of books related to Southeast Asian culture and language. It is the first Southeast Asian-themed bookstore in Taiwan. The founder Lin, Zhou-Xi provides a "friendly living room for migrant workers", so that new immigrants of Southeast Asia can have a place to borrow books.

SEAMi hosted a series of free lectures on the migrant worker salon, inviting four different nationalities of migrant workers from Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines to share their experiences, explain their lives in Taiwan, and introduce the culture of their hometown. It will be conducted in both native tongue and Mandarin Chinese, and at the same time, Southeast Asian-inspired dessert will be made, giving the audience a salon feast.

The four workers have lived in Taiwan for many years, and they each have a unique perspective on what it's like to live abroad. Thy made the decision to carry on working hard because of the love for family in their hometown. The Taoyuan Migrant Workers Service Center, the New Immigrants Association, overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia, and other organizations provide the background for the translation hosts. Some hosts are also new immigrants, acting as a link between the audience and migrant workers.

In addition to providing a platform for migrant workers to share their stories of coming to Taiwan, the event also allows new immigrants to learn from experience when migrant workers in Taiwan face similar difficulties; Taiwanese who are curious about migrant workers can also learn about their lives and their hometowns culture, and bring each other closer.

The language exchange of SEAMi takes place every Friday at 19:30. New immigrants, migrant workers, Taiwanese who are interested in migrant workers’ experiences and stories, and friends from other nationalities are all welcome to join in on the language exchange.
