The International Workshop on Combating Human Trafficking that organized by the Ministry of Interior has been opened this morning (July 25). Nearly 40 countries’ experts, scholars, and officials, about 200 people gathered in order to working together, prevent the human trafficking. The Vice President, Chen Jianren (陳建仁) mentioned that Taiwan has been rated as the first tier of human trafficking prevention for 10 consecutive years, this is the result of joint efforts between the government and the people. He said that we are happy to share Taiwan’s experiences with the international community, to work together to combat the human trafficking.
The Interior Minister, Hsu Guoyong (徐國勇) said that Taiwan is an open country for the immigrants, through the marriages, employments, and studying. In recent years, Taiwan has actively plan to propose various anti-discrimination measures. In May, the name column of “foreign labour” on the Alien Residence Permit was renamed to be “migrant worker”, encourage public to use friendly language for the migrant workers, work closer with the countries of origin of the migrants, let the migrant workers work safely in Taiwan and make the home country of the migrant workers feel at ease.
The Ministry of Interior said that in response to the US 2019 report on human trafficking, and in conjunction with the United Nations’ of International Day of Anti-Human Trafficking on July 30, it specially held a two-day international workshop. The topics of the discussions are “the international trends in preventing human trafficking”, “discussion on corporate social responsibility and fishery exploitation”, “regional joint prevention on human trafficking”, and “defense strategy and the trafficking cases”. It invites the relevant experts and scholars, domestic and abroad to give the lectures and talks for the discussions.
The VIP guests today are Vice President Chen Jianren, the Administrative Committee Member of the Executive Yuan Luo Bingcheng (羅秉成), Minister of the Interior Hsu Guoyong, Deputy Director of the American Institute in Taiwan Raymond Greene, the Secretary General of the International Caritas Association, Aloysius John, and the former ambassador of the United Nations Ambassador to Geneva, Archbishop Silvano M. Tomasi, C. S. More than 250 experts, scholars and officials from nearly 40 countries participated. The international charity association and NGO Caritas Internationalis also join with about international members from 20 countries. This event let Taiwan become an important field in the international discussion of human trafficking issues.
The Minister of Interior stressed that partnerships to prevent the trafficking strategies is very important. This conference also invites the US State Department’s “2018 Human Trafficking Hero Award” winner, Lawyer Kinm Jong Chul from South Korea and Hanh Dang, the CEO of the Association for the Prevention of Human Trafficking (AACT) Vietnam Office. It hopes to improve the regional prevention strategies and concepts, continue to strengthen the cooperation with international partners, implement the guarantee of human rights.
