The Diabetes Association of the Republic of China (Taiwan), the Department of Health of the Kaohsiung City Government, and other units have specifically collaborated with the Health Promotion Administration, MOHW in response to the 2023 World Diabetes Day to organize the 2023 United Nations World Diabetes Day event at the Kaohsiung Music Center. To lower the risk of diabetes and its consequences, the public was urged to learn the five blood sugar management principles during the event.

The National Health Insurance Administration reports that in 2022, 45.5% of diabetes patients utilized fundus examinations, while 69.1% of patients used urine testing. These figures indicate that between 30 and 50% of diabetics still do not do fundus and urine tests on a regular basis. According to the Health Promotion Administration, diabetes raises the risk of retinopathy and cardiovascular disease, both of which can result in stroke and blindness. Regular checkups are necessary to properly avoid diabetes-related problems because their early indications are sometimes non-obvious.

People need to understand the five principles—a balanced diet, regular exercise, weight control, and regular medication—in addition to getting frequent checkups. Furthermore, fundamentally sound lifestyle choices are also crucial. To be effective, they should try to abstain from risk factors including drinking and smoking to stop diabetes and postpone the development of problems.
