2019 Taiwan East Coast Land Arts Festival celebrates sounds of the waves

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The 2019 Taiwan East Coast Land Arts Festival will kick off at Torik Visitor Center (都歷遊客中心) in Taitung County on June 21, promising a range of events that explore the essence and beauty of the island country’s oceanic culture.

Organized by Taiwan East Coast National Scenic Area under the auspices of the Tourism Bureau, the festival has entered its fifth year. The art fest will feature an artist-in-residence program, moonlight sea concerts, an open-space art studio, and cultural fairs.

Artists including Amis woodcarver Siki Sufin (希巨.蘇飛), Futuru Tsai (蔡政良), and sound installation artist DJ Hatfield (施永德) will present their artworks spanning various mediums dedicated to the Atolan Village of the Amis tribe in the indigenous community of Taitung.

The moonlight sea outdoor concerts, another highlight of the fest that has been well-received since its introduction in 2016, will be staged in seven sessions from June through September with the theme of “the sound of waves.” The line-up of performers includes groups and singers like Totem band (圖騰樂團), LanSin band (嵐馨樂團), Sangpuy (桑布伊), Chi Shu-ling (紀淑玲), The Village Armed Youth Band (農村武裝青年), and more.

The open art studio will allow visitors to learn more about the diverse and vibrant art scene of the eastern municipality of Taiwan. A number of selected studios will be open to the public Friday through Sunday between June 21 and Sep. 30, where sales of cultural merchandise and hands-on activities will take place.
