The Dragon Boat Festival is around the corner, Chiayi Family Support Center (嘉義家扶中心) held the Dragon Boat Festival activity “Zongzi Leaves Fragrance activity” on the morning of June 2, 2019. There were 50 families and 135 parents-children participated in this event. Many parents, under the guidance of volunteers personally wrapped rice dumpling
Huang Min-hui (黃敏惠), Chiayi City Mayor said that festivals can always unite the power of everyone and traditional practices are passed on through cultural activities.
This event, Chiayi Family Support Center designed the rice dumpling wrapping and Egg balancing activity, let the rice dumpling wrapping skill continue to pass on, and the custom of the Dragon Boat Festival will always be circulated.
A xiang (阿祥), a student of the third grade living in Chiayi City, grew up and was raised by his grandmother. His grandmother has poor eyesight and become inflexible after she became ill. However, A Xiang family wanted to wrap rice dumpling by their own. A Xiang became a family representative to join the event to wrap rice dumpling. He learnt how to stack two pieces of leave, put in sticky rice, pork, etc., how to tie the leaves and tie the rope, under the guidance of volunteers, he even wrapped 2 bundles of 40 rice dumplings. He looked forward to bring rice dumplings back home to surprise his family.
Many new residents’ mothers also wrapped Taiwan’s traditional rice dumplings at this event. Through the family friends’ volunteers, they demonstrated how to stir-fry ingredients with mushrooms and put salted eggs in rice dumplings. For the integration of traditional Taiwanese festivals celebration, new residents have sense of happiness.
Shen Ming-yan (沈明彥), the director of the Chiayi Family Support Center, said that all the ingredients for this activity were prepared by the center volunteers the day before. It is expected that the ingredients can wrapped 50 bundles of rice dumplings. Moreover, children (elementary school children) were led by volunteers to play interesting games based on the story of the Dragon Boat Festival.
