Indian One-horned Rhino still be Threatened, Caring Process cannot be stopped

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) has ban the trade of the global rhinoceros’ horn, however it can’t resist the black market transaction. Because of the superstition of rhinoceros horn in some Asian countries, the poaching activity continues to paralyze. A group of rangers in the Kaziranga National Park, India are trying to conserver the vulnerable one-horned rhinoceros, hope to maintain the survival of this animal.

In order to combat the illegal poaching, the Indian authorities will demolish illegal houses inside the park, and organize a special rhinoceros protection force with the military. It designed to protect the safety if the one-horned rhinoceros, fully rescue this species for the survival.

In 2018, about 2.143 one-horned rhinoceros were founded in the Kaziranga National Park. However, their numbers continue to decline during its shrinking habitat and the threat of poaching. According to the local media reportage, in January this year, 3 of one-horned rhinos were killed by the poachers, because their horns can cost up to 130.000 euro in the local black market, a huge income in India.

According to the statistics of the Forest Department of Assam, in 2014 about 27 one-horned rhinos were killed by the poachers, while in 2015 there were 16 and 12 in the 2016. Although the number of rangers has increased to 700, in order to alleviate the killing activities, but the some of the rhinos has been killed. In 2017, 7 of rhinos were killed and in 2018 6 of them were killed. The threat has been decreased but has not been lifted yet.

Kaziranga National Park is located in Assam, India, where the Rhinoceros unicornis that known as one-horn rhinos and other endangered species live, such as the tigers, elephants, and leopards. As a nature reserve it should not be disturbed by the humans, and in 1985 this park was declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
