Hands-on English Language Learning: Workplace English Camp for students

The Education Department of New Taipei City Government and Taipei City University of Science and Technology held a Workplace English Camp for students on April 13. 

The camp is surrounded by the theme“Hands-on English Language Learning” (動手做、學英語), aiming to help students practice workplace English. Students who participated in the camp all showed their bilingual skills as they practiced being a tour guide. 

The activity was divided into two sessions. During the morning session, the students followed a foreign teacher on a local Xinbeitou outdoor tour. The foreign teacher explained the famous scenic sites of Xinbeitou in English. 

The students also filmed videos and practiced to introduce sites in English. Through the tour, students were able to practice their English skills and learn the local stories of Xinbeitou.

During the afternoon session, there was an indoor video learning activity. The camp provided AR and VR, an interactive experience of a real-world environment, to explain the process of producing a video.

Through the explanation, students produced their own “Xinbeitou guide video.” The camp aims to provide a chance for students to apply their English in daily life. 

Students mentioned that they enjoyed the activities, and also learned a lot from the camp. 

They filmed videos while listening to the English tour. And when editing the videos, they added English introductions on their own. In the end, not only did they enhance their English ability, but also, feel more confident in speaking English.

The Education Department of New Taipei City Government mentions that the Workplace English Camp aims to relate workplace English with daily life. Through Situated learning, students show more interest through “Hands-on English Language Learning.” The camp provides more opportunities for the students to speak English and enhance their professional skills.
