  Legionnaires' Disease Outbreak in New York Reaches Guggenheim Museum

  New York City is responding to another outbreak of Legionnaires' disease after Legionella bacteria were detected in cooling towers at several buildings on Manhattan's Upper East Side, including the renowned Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. According to the Associated Press, city health officials have ordered 31 buildings to clean and disinfect their cooling towers as a precaution.Legionnaires' disease is a severe form of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria, which spread through contaminated water droplets rather than person-to-person contact. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says symptoms, including fever, cough, headache, muscle aches, and shortness of breath, typically develop between two days and two weeks after exposure.The Guggenheim Museum said it routinely hires a specialized contractor to inspect and maintain its cooling tower and has already completed the required disinfection. City officials stressed that detecting Legionella does not necessarily identify the source of the outbreak because current testing cannot determine whether the bacteria are alive. Authorities also said no additional protective measures are needed for museum visitors or staff.More than 50 cases have been linked to the current outbreak, with fewer than 20 patients still hospitalized and no deaths reported so far. Last year, a major Legionnaires' disease outbreak in Harlem killed seven people and sickened more than 100 others, with investigators tracing the source to contaminated cooling towers, highlighting the importance of proper maintenance of building water systems.

Following the recent food safety incident, the Executive Yuan has expanded the precautionary recall to soybean salad oil produced between April and June, while announcing a refund mechanism to help consumers protect their rights.Consumers may choose one of two refund methods. The first is to contact the three major distributors directly—TaiSun Enterprise, Fwusow Industry, or Formosa Oilseed Processing Co. Refund applications may be made with receipts, invoices, credit card records, electronic transaction records, the purchased product, or even the empty oil container.The second option is to request a refund through participating retailers. Customers who purchased products from PX Mart, Da Chuan Lian, Simple Mart, or Si Hu Hui should return to the original store where the purchase was made. Products purchased from Wanjiafu, A.mart, Le Jia Kang, OKmart, or RT-Mart may be refunded at any branch nationwide. Consumers who only have the used oil container should contact one of the three distributors directly.If consumers encounter refund disputes, they may call the 1950 Consumer Service Hotline, seek assistance from local consumer service centers, or file an online complaint through the Consumer Protection Committee website. Consumers are encouraged to confirm product batches and retain proof of purchase before applying for refunds.
